“Awesome” was the first reaction to the Milky Way splashed across the white tower of Harry Gesner’s fantastic mid century Malibu beach house. The fact that the comment came from the extraordinary architect and octogenarian Gesner himself made me beam. There was a magical interval as the camera’s long exposure captured the sunset / “starry sky” juxtaposition. “Lust for life” might have been written for Mr. Gesner, a daily surfer with mad charm. His home, a future/past hybrid design ties together California open-beam, 17th century Dutch windmill and Chinese pagoda. Awesome.
Photographer Hilary Walsh pitched Gesner’s house to Casa Vogue after we’d shot a celebrity fashion story there with actress Camilla Belle for C Magazine. They bit. And I pitched Hilary this idea – 65 full scale salmon I’d build and suspend in a large school from the ceiling. The fish would appear to swim thru the plate glass windows mere feet from the Pacific surf into the fireplace. She loved it and to my delight, so did Harry.
